Dovetail

Rectangular frames can rack into parallelograms unless diagonal braces add the immutable strength of triangles to the mix. Braces in the corners strengthen the building against wind load by blocking the closure of the right angles. Triangles in roof trusses put some timbers into tension while bracing the compressed timbers against bending. Braces are critical, but can be only as strong as the joints that connect them.

Both the miter lap and the half-lap can pull free, but the dovetail lap can come out only the way it went in—at right angles to the strain. The dovetail keeps the joint strong in tension, and the shoulder resists compression. Because it is a lap joint, it can be let into a frame after it has been assembled.

The dovetail lap becomes a half-dovetail when it connects timbers diagonally, as in braces and collar beams. In right-angled tying joints, the dovetail remains full. The top of a flared "gunstock" post carries both the plate and the tie beam on tenoned shoulders. The underside of the plate is partially cut away to form the dovetail that drops in the corresponding socket in the top of the plate.
