Cut the lower half of the lapped notch in the wall plate by sawing across the grain and then adzing out the waste.
Drop the joist into the notch and mark the width of the upper notch.

Pull the joist back out and gauge down from its top edge.

One wall at a time, one floor at a time, one roof truss after another—the carpenter will measure, cut, and drive timbers together. There will be sweat in every beam, skill in every cut, but from the first tree felled, the carpenter's intelligence has imagined the whole.
