The trend in agriculture has been to larger farms. This trend has increased the demand for machines with larger and larger capacity. A previous chapter discussed that the options for increasing capacity are: using a wider width, operating at a faster speed (both requiring more power) and increasing efficiency of operation.
It also is important to be able to complete the operation in a timely fashion. Unfortunately, information on the timeliness of agricultural operations is limited. Some concepts of timeliness and the effect of machine size are discussed in the next section.
