Measuring Distances

Several methods and devices can be used for measuring distance. The principal ones are:

1. pacing

2. odometer

3. taping or "chaining"

4. stadia

5. optical range finder

6. electronic distance measuring (EDM)

One of the decisions that must be made when preparing to measure a distance is selecting the method or device to use. The following sections will discuss each of these devices and help the user make that decision.

First, it will be helpful to review the common units of distance (displacement). The common English units are as follows:

1 foot (ft) = 12 inches (in) 1 yard (yd) = 3 feet (ft) 1 rod = 16.5 feet (ft) = 5.5 yards (yd) 1 mile (mi) = 5280 feet (ft) = 1760 yards (yd) = 320 rods

In the SI system, the units are:

1 meter (m) = 1,000 millimeters (mm) 1 kilometer (km) = 1,000 meters (m)

The units cancellation method is very useful for converting from one unit of measure to another.
