All machines have breakdowns, but the quality of the construction will dramatically influence the repair costs for a tractor or machine. There is also a correlation between the complexity of a tractor or machine and the cost of repairs. It would be expected that a combine would have more repair costs that a cultivator. The cost of repairs is also influenced by the use and abuse of the tractor or machine. Any equipment that is not maintained or used in any manner not recommended by the manufacturer will have greater repair costs. As discussed in the previous section, downtime for repairs is also important because of the lost capacity. Evaluate the equipment not only on its quality and durability but also on the amount of time and money that will be required to have it repaired.
