A trapezoid is a four-sided figure with only two parallel sides. Note that the height must be measured perpendicular to the parallel sides, Figure 13.14.

The area of a trapezoid is determined by the equation:

where A = Area; h = Height (distance between the parallel sides); a = Length of one parallel side; b = Length of the second parallel side.

Problem: What is the area (ac) of a trapezoid with parallel sides of 300.0 ft and 450.0 ft, and with a height of 120.0 ft?

Solution: (using conversion to acres):

43,560 ft2
