Lower Extremity

The best evidence of lower extremity repetitive motion injuries applies to hip and knee osteoarthritis. A strong positive association between frequent bending of the knee and the development of osteoarthritis of the knee has been reported. Dairy farming, which is primarily milking and tractor driving, has been shown to have odds ratios (OR) ranging from 1.39 to 2.98 for hip and knee osteoarthritis. A study of Swedish farmers reported a dose-response association between the number of cows milked (OR 4.5; 95% CI 1.9-11.0) or working more than 5 hours per day (OR 13.3; 95% CI 1.2-145.0) and the onset of hip or knee disease (25-29).
