Use of Photocatalysis to Reduce Toxic Effects of Breakdown Products

There is a sensitivity of key fungal enzymes to explosive degradation products that currently limits the use of fungi in bioremediation of contaminated materials. This is exemplified by the sensitivity of veratryl alcohol oxidase activity of P. chrysosporim LiP to HADNT. A solution to this problem may be in the use of combined photo-catalytic and biological processes. The photo catalytic process degrades the toxic intermediates of breakdown and allows the fungal enzymes to continue mineralizing the products of photo-catalytic breakdown (Hess et al. 1998).
