The hone is held flat on the flat side of the blade and also flat against the bevel. A short cutting bevel is not made as is done with the chisel and plane bit.

To file a shears or scissors, the blade is held in a metal vise with the beveled edge up, and the strokes are made with the file as indicated in Figure 40. Either a flat mill file or a triangular file may be used for this work. After it is filed, it is honed as is done after grinding.
