Grinding A Scythe

A good position for holding the blade of a scythe on the grinder, is illustrated in Figure 20. Tipping the back of the blade away from the grinder will result in a blunt or thick blade, and tipping it toward the grinder will result in thinning the blade just back of the cutting edge. Effort should be made by grinding and examination of the work to find the right angle and position at which to hold the blade, and then continue to hold it at that angle for the full length of the blade. To prevent excessive heating of the blade, which would result if it were held at one point for any length of time, the blade is moved along over the grinder.
