Shears may be ground or filed. If ground, a fine stone is preferable to a coarse one. Great care must be taken to hold it at the proper angle. A good way is to place it on the grinder and observe the position before starting the grinder. A desirable position for the hands and tool is shown in Figure 39. Usually one draw of the blade across the grinding wheel is sufficient. After it is ground, the wire edge is removed by honing with an oilstone.
