Conservation Mechanisms
In situ conservation may be achieved through several possible mechanisms that are discussed in the chapters in the first section of this book, as well as in the final two chapters. Hence, possible mechanisms are discussed only briefly here. One possibility is to directly pay farmers to undertake conservation activities (perhaps through mechanisms like the Conservation Reserve Program in the United States), but doing so will probably not work well, particularly in developing countries.
