Challenging the moldboard plow tor ue lead in farmer popularity, especially in hilly ami dry country, is the chisel plow or the very similar field, cultivator, sometimes called simply the digger. This plow consists of sets ol curved unes or small shovels which dig up the soil to depth of ¡2 to 18 inches, loosening and lifting it, but not turning it over like a moldhoard plow does. The chisels are shaped in an arc, something like the letter C so that the point penetrates the soil ahead of the shank. Chiseled ground is not nearly as subject to wind or water erosion as moldboard-plowed soil. Some plant material remains on or neat the sulfate to hold tile soil ill place

Chisel plows come in several designs, either with twisted shovels or straight shovels. Stiaight shovels are usually two inches wide, while the twisted ones vary up to four inches wide. Twisted shovels tend to stir and mix the soil more than the straight type and are used when heavy plain residues need to be incorporated into the soil.

fat turn s have combined the disc ami the dmel plow—a series of straight coulters in front of the chisels to cut up the plant residues. You don't have to use a stalk chopper or disc ahead of this kind of chisel. But it requires a large tractor to pull it.
