Microbiological analysis

Samples taken for chemical analysis may also be used for microbiological analysis. This may be the case for silage samples, when harmful clostridia could spoil the beneficial fermentation of Lactobacillus. It is therefore essential that the treatment of the sample immediately after collection should both prevent the further growth of the microbial species present and protect from the ingress of any harmful microorganisms or fungal spores. Although biased towards food samples, Microbiology for the Analytical Chemist by R.K. Dart (1996) is a helpful publication.
