The swath where Smith had mowed looked like it had been cut with a lawnmower, so short was the remaining growth, and there weren't many places where the scythe had skipped and left little telltale manes of uncut grass. Then it was off to a picnic on the Stone farm lawn, with fiddle music by the Dave Levine
An old lawn mower can be arranged to make a fairly satisfactory straw or feed cutter. One must working the lawn mower working the lawn mower rig up a hopper, as shown in the sketch, and attach the mower to the lower end of it so that the straw or grain will just strike the knives where the grass usually comes into the mower. A crank and a belt arrangement makes it easy for one man to feed and turn the cutter. This is a good use for a lawn mower in the winter time when it is not working outdoors.
Farmers can have running water, hot or coild, in their dwelling houses at a cost of fifty dollars and up, depending upon the size of the house and the kind of equipment needed. This makes possible the bath and toilet room, protection from fire, the easy washing of windows and walks, the sprinkling of lawns, the irrigating of gardens, and all the other conveniences which a few years ago were thought possible only in cities, where big water systems were available. This is one of the things that makes farm life attractive. It lessens the work in the house, insures a fine lawn and garden, reduces danger from fire, adds greatly to comfort and convenience in every direction. amount of water to be used is not large, the system can be installed for 50. For the average house 90 is a better figure. Where the house is large, and where consideraDle amounts of water are needed for the lawn and garden, and possibly also for washing carriages, automobiles and horses, a larger system should be...
This widely distributed, polyphagous pest is associated mainly with permanent grassland and lawns but can also damage a wide range of agricultural and horticultural crops planted in recently broken-up grassland or pasture. Not all adverse noise is encountered in the workplace. We are surrounded by such sound generators such as outdoor and indoor equipment and appliances (lawn mowers, chain saws, sink disposals, blenders, clothes washers, and the like) and recreation and hobby equipment (gas-powered model planes and cars, unmuffled racing car and boat engines, firearms and explosive devices, high power stereo amplifiers and speaker systems, trail motorcycles, snowmobiles, and pleasure aircraft, among other things). Many of these items generate unusually intense sounds, but when we are preoccupied with the utility and the joy of using them, we are seldom aware of the noise they create or their potential for damaging our hearing.
The most common above ground irrigation system is the sprinkler. In sprinkler systems, water is injected into the air by one of the three types of nozzles spray, rotor, or impact. Sprinkler systems can be used on any land that can be cultivated. Sprinklers may be solid set (in a permanent position) or movable. The common means of movement are (1) manual-lawn sprinkler or pipe system (2) tractor-moved-skid or wheel-mounted system (3) self-moved-side wheel roll or big gun system and (4) self-propelled-center pivot and lateral move system. Different modifications and variations of these systems are used. The best system depends on the topography, shape and size of the field, the amount and cost of labor for movement, and the value added for the crop. For sprinkler systems, it is important that the application rate not exceed the infiltration rate of the soil.
Which rotates at a high speed as the machine is being driven forward. The flails cut the stationary vegetation by impact, in a manner similar to a hand-operated grass slasher or a conventional rotary lawn mower. Rotating at high speed, they also act as a fan and provide a draft of air and the necessary momentum for blowing the cut material up through an elevated exit spout. The shape of the spout directs the cut material into a trailer at the rear with the help of an adjustable end flap. The height of the cut is regulated by adjusting the wheels on which the machine is mounted. Some Hail mowers simply cut high grasses and leave them in the field to be raked or baled.
Now cover the frame thus formed, as shown in the accompanying illustration. Any thin cotton goods that may be laundered can be used. Figured lawn would be very pretty, and if economy is an item, a worn bleaching sheet will do. Place a little mattress or pad and a tiny pillow within, or
Here is a homemade device for catching small pigs which saves much time and annoyance. The net may be made from a discarded lawn tennis net, the rim from a bicycle wheel, and the handle is a heavy rake handle. The net is securely fastened to the rim with some copper wire, while the rim is fastened to the handle with two pieces of band iron. Small pigs caught in the net will not squeal and struggle as when chased around the pen and caught by one leg. The element of excitement is greatly reduced by use of the net, and some would find less fun in the net method. On the whole, however, we recommend it.
