Plot size

The field plot size is chosen to give the required degree of precision for measurement of the selected characteristic. Sampling only a fraction of the plot, providing the sampling error is acceptable, may save time and expense. The sampling error is the difference between the value of the fraction and the value if the whole plot (population) had been sampled. If adequate precision is retained, it may be possible to bulk samples together at a later stage to reduce the numbers for chemical analysis.
