Highly intensive agricultural droughts are experienced in some regions of Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Kazakhstan, and other CIS countries. Povozhie, North Caucasus, and Central-Chernozem are arid regions that produce two-thirds of the total grain production in Russia. In severe drought years, crop yields are reduced to 40-60% as compared to nondrought years. The Russian system of early drought monitoring is in its developmental stage. However, its isolated components have been in operation for some years.
