Double Low Low Erucic Acid and Low Glucosinolate Rapeseed Canola Cultivar Development

The development of low-erucic acid rapeseed cultivars for edible oil purposes created a high-quality vegetable oil from low-quality rapeseed oil. However, the nutritional value of rapeseed meal was limited by plant secondary metabolites known as glucosinolates commonly found in Brassica species (Kimber and McGregor 1995). Glucosinolates affected the thyroid gland of animals fed rapeseed meal, and the glu-cosinolates reduced the palatability of rapeseed meal. Rapeseed breeders screened rapeseed germplasm for genetic sources of low-glucosinolate concentration. A genetic source of low-glucosinolate concentration was discovered in a B. napus cultivar from Poland (Bronowski) at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Saskatoon, research station in 1967 (Stefansson and Downey 1995).

Thermoregulation in Hot Environments

Factors that can impact the increased production of heat include muscular conditioning, timing and type of food intake, and the factors that impact basal metabolism. These factors include thyroid hormone status, gender, age, race, and the presence of illness. Pregnancy can increase heat production and impact regulation as well. Drugs, such as cocaine or other stimulants, can increase the metabolic rate and create heat. Infections can cause fever that not only creates heat but also decreases the body's ability to adjust for heat (3,4).

Diagnosis History

Bronchitis Pityriasis rosea Folliculitis Urticaria Insect bite Epistaxis Thyroid disease Drug misuse (legal The differential diagnosis should be considered in each situation, and appropriate testing performed to rule out conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disease, and drug use that may mimic the symptoms of chemical exposure in an agricultural worker (Table 13.3) (8).

Laboratory Studies

Blood, liver, and renal test results may be obscured by a preexisting disease and may be abnormal only in severe exposures. Nevertheless, such tests should be done as soon after the alleged exposure as possible to establish a baseline and to exclude other illnesses such as anemia, diabetes, thyroid disease, and infectious diseases. Rapid drug and alcohol tests can quickly document drug intoxication concomitant with, or masquerading as, a chemical related illness. Cholinesterase testing for organophosphate poisoning is discussed in Chapter 9 (16).
