where K is a proportionality constant associated with equilibrium adsorption. The reason that the linear isotherm is included in discussions is because it is simple and provides a rather reassuring reference to both Lang-muir and Freundlich isotherms.

The Langmuir isotherm is more widespread and easily explained away with a theoretical basis that accounts for irreversible adsorption as a result of an equilibrium between adsorption and desorption. Its expression is not neat but insightful (Equation 3.11):
