A few more laps. The sloping seat in the sawhorse beam causes the straight leg to kick out. But fit the reciprocally sloped end of a timber into it and you'll have a miter lap joint. This old joint allows you to fit studs into a wall, even after the main timbers have been framed and pegged. The stud gets marked where it overlaps the beam and trimmed to a shoulder and beveled tongue. Fit it against the beam again and mark around the overlap. Saw the diagonal and chisel out the wood in between so that the lap can drop in flush with the surface. It's not a great joint, because it can get pushed out against the single spike that holds it in place, but colonial Virginia houses are full of them.
